Love Your Liver: A Guide for People with PKD

Love Your Liver Awareness Month, a great opportunity to think about your liver health and how to support this amazing “multi-tasker” of an organ. For many people living with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), liver cysts, known as polycystic liver disease (PLD), are also common.

PLD often develops silently, causing few or no symptoms for most people. For some, however, cysts can grow large enough to cause discomfort or other complications. Whether or not you have symptoms, being aware of your liver health is important. Regular check-ups and imaging scans with your healthcare team can help you monitor any changes and ensure your liver is functioning well.

Supporting Your Liver

While there is no single cure for PLD, lifestyle habits can support overall liver health. The British Liver Trust encourages simple steps to care for your liver, and their pledges are a fun way to get started. Options include:

  • Completing a fitness challenge
  • Giving up alcohol for a month
  • Eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day
  • Cutting down on sugar
  • Reducing processed foods and takeaways

You do not need to do everything at once. Choosing one small pledge can make a difference and help you feel more in control of your liver health.
A balanced diet, staying hydrated, and regular physical activity are all gentle ways to support your liver. For people with PLD, these steps will not prevent cysts from forming, but they can help your liver work at its best and improve overall wellbeing.

Why Your Liver Matters

Sitting under your ribs on the right side of your body, the liver is an incredible organ. It is often described as the body’s “engine” or “factory” thanks to the more than 500 vital functions it performs, including:

  • Processing digested food from the gut
  • Controlling sugar, fat, and amino acid levels in the blood
  • Removing drugs and toxins
  • Fighting infections
  • Making bile to help digest fat
  • Storing iron, vitamins, and other chemicals

Even if your liver is currently symptom-free, understanding its role can help you appreciate why awareness and proactive care are empowering.
